Golf for Heroes: Support Veterans & First Responders

July 28, 20265 min read

For veterans and first responders, returning home or stepping away from active duty does not always mean that the challenges of service are over. Many continue to face isolation, stress, difficulty reconnecting with others, and the need for a community that understands their experiences.

Golf for Heroes, a signature programme of the WeDoGood nonprofit, creates opportunities for veterans, first responders, healthcare workers, and their families to come together through golf. The programme combines recreation, connection, recognition, and community support in an environment where participants can feel welcomed and appreciated.

By bringing heroes and their families together on the golf course, WeDoGood demonstrates that supporting those who serve can be meaningful, engaging, and deeply personal.

What Is Golf for Heroes?

Golf for Heroes is a community-focused initiative that uses golf to honour and support veterans, firefighters, police officers, EMS professionals, healthcare workers, and their families.

The programme includes local golf clinics and fundraising tournaments. Participants can receive instruction from golf professionals, improve their skills, play a round of golf, and connect with other individuals and families who understand the experiences associated with public and military service.

The goal extends beyond the game itself. Golf provides a relaxed setting where participants can build relationships, enjoy time outdoors, and create positive memories with their families.

Whether someone is an experienced golfer or holding a club for the first time, Golf for Heroes offers an inclusive way to participate, connect, and be recognised for their service.

Why Golf Can Bring Heroes Together

Golf is often described as an individual sport, but much of its value comes from the relationships formed on the course. Players spend several hours walking, talking, learning, and encouraging one another.

For veterans and first responders, this atmosphere can make it easier to connect without the pressure of a formal support setting. A shared activity creates natural opportunities for conversation, trust, and camaraderie.

Golf can also offer:

  • Time outdoors in a peaceful environment

  • A structured but enjoyable recreational activity

  • Opportunities to develop new skills

  • Social interaction with fellow service members and families

  • A sense of progress and personal accomplishment

  • Meaningful time with friends and loved ones

These experiences cannot replace professional healthcare or mental health services, but they can contribute to a stronger sense of connection and belonging.

Supporting Veterans Beyond Words

Expressions of gratitude are important, but meaningful support requires action. Veterans and first responders may need assistance in many different areas, including education, family stability, community connection, recreation, and post-service opportunities.

The WeDoGood nonprofit was founded by Charles Dame, a disabled U.S. Marine Corps veteran whose personal experience inspired him to create an organisation dedicated to honouring and uplifting people who serve their communities. Its mission has grown to support veterans, first responders, healthcare heroes, and families who have lost loved ones in service.

Golf for Heroes turns that mission into a shared experience. It gives community members, businesses, sponsors, volunteers, and golfers a practical way to help while directly engaging with the people the programme is designed to serve.

Honouring First Responders and Their Families

First responders regularly enter difficult and dangerous situations to protect others. Firefighters, police officers, paramedics, EMTs, and other public safety professionals may encounter physical danger, emotional stress, long shifts, and time away from their families.

Their families also make sacrifices. They manage unpredictable schedules, missed celebrations, emergency callouts, and the uncertainty that can accompany public safety work.

Golf for Heroes recognises both the individual who serves and the family supporting that service. Clinics and tournaments provide a space where families can participate together, meet others with similar experiences, and enjoy a day centred on appreciation rather than responsibility.

How Golf Fundraising Creates an Impact

Charity golf tournaments bring together supporters who may otherwise have limited opportunities to engage with a nonprofit’s mission. Golfers, local businesses, volunteers, donors, and sponsors can all contribute in different ways.

Funds raised through events can help a nonprofit expand programmes, provide family assistance, create scholarships, organise community activities, and reach more people in need.

A business might sponsor a hole, provide event materials, donate a prize, register a team, or become a larger programme partner. Individuals can participate as golfers, volunteers, donors, or advocates.

Every level of involvement helps introduce more people to the mission and builds a wider network of support around veterans and first responders.

How You Can Support Golf for Heroes

You do not need to be a professional golfer to make a difference. There are several ways to become involved:

Participate in a Clinic or Tournament

Veterans, first responders, healthcare workers, and eligible family members can explore opportunities to participate in Golf for Heroes events.

Become a Sponsor

Businesses can support veterans while demonstrating a genuine commitment to the local community. Sponsorships may also help cover event costs and expand access for participating heroes.

Volunteer Your Time

Volunteers can assist with registration, participant support, event coordination, fundraising activities, and other responsibilities that help events run successfully.

Make a Donation

Donations help WeDoGood continue developing programmes for veterans, first responders, healthcare workers, single parents, and hero families.

Share the Mission

Sharing Golf for Heroes with friends, colleagues, local organisations, and social networks can help the programme reach more participants and supporters.

Tee Off for a Greater Purpose

Golf for Heroes is about more than completing 18 holes. It is about recognising sacrifice, strengthening relationships, and creating a community where people who serve know they have not been forgotten.

Through golf clinics, tournaments, sponsorships, and community participation, the WeDoGood nonprofit gives individuals and businesses an opportunity to turn gratitude into meaningful action.

When communities come together to support veterans and first responders, even a simple day on the golf course can create connections that continue long after the final putt.

Join Golf for Heroes, support an upcoming event, or help bring a WeDoGood golf tournament to your community. One round, one connection, or one good deed can make a lasting difference.
